In Magnolias, Sweet Tea, and Exhaust, Carole Townsend goes to ground with NASCAR, following the races at Southern tracks from one to the next, learning about the sport and the culture of NASCAR as she goes. Townsend meets and interviews top drivers as well as some of NASCAR’s rising stars, legends, team owners, pit crews, and fans. In a display of immersion journalism at its best, Townsend takes a ride in one of the cars on a track at race speed, tours the multimillion dollar garages in North Carolina, learns from mechanics, mingles with fans, and participates in the much-coveted infield camping party at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Gaining behind-the-scenes access at races, she experiences up close the dedication, competition, and precision of NASCAR teams during qualifying trials and races.

Yes, I grew up with a Daddy who watched NASCAR every Sunday. My better half grew up literally on the racing circuit, too. Sure, I knew some things about NASCAR by osmosis, but I prefer NHRA drag racing.... or do I? Carole's book might have made me rethink 'The NASCAR'... She writes such a perfect introduction to the sport, you find yourself laughing at, and with, her. Who wears a white suit to a track? She did.... Who wears more than one drivers numbers? She did... You'll find yourself learning more than you expected, and maybe wanting to go sign up for a ride along, too.... No matter where you live, whether NASCAR was part of your life before or not, there's something in this book for you. Look for it! Online, at your local grocery (like Kroger) or heck, pick up a second copy once she convinces you to head to your local track 😉

Awesome read! Carole does a fantastic job introducing the new fans to the excitement and fascination of NASCAR! Each track develops into it's own destination city on event weekend. Carole does a great job describing the atmosphere of the tracks she has visited, the sights, sounds, smells and excitement! Magnolias, Sweet Tea, and Exhaust is funny, light hearted and holds a treasure trove of information for the new race fan. It is a must read if someone is planning to attend their first NASCAR event!

Having been a NASCAR fan for over 40 years and having attended many races, many at tracks mentioned in this book,I could put myself back in time at any given race, Carole definitely has a great grasp on the NASCAR family from both team and fan side. A must read for anyone who has ever camped at a race ,wants to camp at a race or just wants to attend a race. She and her racing friends can hang out at my campsite and talk NASCAR any time!

You can hate NASCAR but you won't hate this. A book that is funny as hell but also insightful. Carole is the female Lewis Grizzard. Don't know him, don't worry & enjoy this book.

New to NASCAR? This is the book for you. Been a NASCAR fan for years? This is the book for you. In Magnolias, Sweet Tea, and Exhaust, Carole Townsend hits the ground running discovering what the excitement is in the NASCAR community. Learning valuable lessons along the way (dress comfortably), she travels to tracks throughout the southeast learning first-hand why fans are both NASCAR and driver loyal. Not only does she review races throughout the 2013 season, she also delves into the history of the sport and how it got its start. Whether it's interviewing winning crew chiefs and drivers or run-of-the-mill fans, Carole covers it all in this amazing read. Using her usual wit and humor, Carole will make you chuckle at her antics as she learns first-hand the NASCAR phenomenon. Excellent read by an excellent author.
